A rights organisation filed a writ petition with the High Court on Monday seeking its direction upon the government to make the probe report on stock market debacle public within two days.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) also prayed to the court to direct the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman to file a criminal case against the persons/individuals/companies, who will be found liable for the share market disaster after publishing the report.
The committee formed to probe the share market debacle submitted the report to the finance minister on April 7.
On behalf of the HRPB, five lawyers -- Asaduzzaman Siddiqui, Sarwar Ahad, Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan, Mahabubur Rahman Khan and Mahabubul Islam -- filed the writ petition as public interest litigation
Counsel for the organisation Advocate Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star that the vacation bench of Justice Syed Mohammad Ziaul Karim and Justice ANM Bashirullah might hear the petition later in the day.
The petitioners in the petition requested the court to direct the government to seize the passports and bank accounts of the persons/individuals/companies, who will be found liable in the publishing report, until full-fledged investigation is completed.
They sought directive from the HC on the government to recover the money and returned it to the accounts of affected shareholders.
The HRPB lawyers prayed to the court to issue a rule upon the government to explain why its inaction in publishing the report submitted by the committee headed by Ibrahim Khaled would not be declared illegal.
They also prayed for direction upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to ensure effective trial against the persons/individuals/companies, who will be found responsible in the publishing report
